The Agentic AI Permissions Check
When you give an AI access to your calendar, email, or files, a permission box pops up, and most people click Allow without reading it. I learned to slow down and read exactly what I'm handing over. Here's how I check, every time.
Read vs. change
There's a big difference between an AI that can read your data and one that can change it. "List" or "read" means it can see, not touch. "Create," "edit," "manage," or "delete" means it can change things. Read the verb in the prompt. That verb is the whole story.
The three buttons
Deny — nothing happens. Safe when you're unsure.
Allow once — it does this one thing, one time, then has to ask again. Start here.
Always allow — it can do this kind of action from now on without asking. Only after you trust it.
Know what it actually sees
When you grant access, the AI sees everything in that data. For a calendar, that's event titles, times, locations, who's invited, and any notes. Assume it sees all of it, not just the part you care about.
The fine print: access is often bigger than the prompt
The box might show one small request, like one day of events. But the access you granted when you first connected the tool can be much broader. Check what you agreed to at connection, not just this one prompt.
You can always take it back
Changed your mind? Revoke at the source: your account's security settings, third-party access, remove the tool. That cuts it off even if you clicked Always allow.
The rule
Sovereignty isn't refusing AI. It's deciding, on purpose, what it gets to see. Run this before you click:
An AI tool wants access to my [calendar/email/files/photos]. Explain in plain language exactly what I'm agreeing to, whether it can read only or also change things, what it will be able to see, the risks, and how to revoke it later.
