The Sovereignty Migration Checklist

I moved my digital life off big tech one swap at a time: files, email, phone, voice. Here's the path I took, the tools I chose, and a prompt for each step so you can check it against your own setup.

Don't just take my word for it. Run the prompt and decide. Work top to bottom, or jump to what's bugging you most.

Step 1

Files

Swap: Google Drive / iCloud / Dropbox → Proton Drive (encrypted), with a real local copy on your own machine. Set files to stay fully on your device, not cloud-only.

Research prompt
I want to move my files off [Google Drive/iCloud/Dropbox] onto an encrypted drive I control, keeping a real local copy. I'm on [Windows/Mac]. Give me the privacy-first options and exact steps, avoiding cloud-only placeholder files.

Step 2

Email

Swap: Gmail / Outlook → Proton Mail. Move your key accounts over one at a time.

Research prompt
I'm switching from [Gmail/Outlook] to encrypted email without losing old mail. Give me the safe step-by-step migration and how to forward the old address.

Step 3

Phone

Swap: a phone tied to big-tech accounts → a clean setup. App stores: Aurora Store + F-Droid. Browser: Brave (or Firefox Focus). Keyboard: HeliBoard or FUTO Keyboard.

Research prompt
I'm setting up a [brand/model] phone for maximum privacy. How do I set it up without big-tech accounts, and which open-source app store, browser, and keyboard should I use? Give the trade-offs.

Step 4

Voice

Swap: cloud dictation → on-device. Computer: Whisper Desktop or OpenWhispr. Phone: FUTO Voice Input, Sayboard, or Offline Voice Input. Recording: Fossify Voice Recorder (saves locally).

Research prompt
I want voice-to-text and recording that runs fully offline on my [phone/computer], keeps the audio, and supports [languages]. Give the most accurate open-source options for each.

Step 5

Moving files between devices

Swap: cloud apps → direct transfer. LocalSend (wireless, same network), a USB cable, or Bluetooth.

Research prompt
I want to move photos and videos from my phone to my computer with no cloud. I'm on [Windows/Mac] with [Android/iPhone]. Give the fastest local options and the steps.

That deserves its own check. Read what each permission grants before you click.

The Agentic AI Permissions Check

One rule throughout: keep sensitive or regulated data (client, health, legal) in its own protected place. Never mixed with everyday files.

Start with one swap. The one bugging you most. Begin there.
